Last night Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake were impersonating what Michael McDonald would sound like singing “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” when McDonald himself showed up. This was a pretty hilarious skit from last night. We’re only hoping that a fourth installment of “The History of Rap” will make an appearance before weeks’ end.

Three Michael McDonalds Sing ‘Row, Row, Row Your Boat’

The only thing better than one Michael McDonald is three. Featuring Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake.

I had the pleasure of seeing them on the TWLOHA Light & Heavy Tour last month. Start your Tuesday right with the melodic harmonies of this fast-rising Brooklyn-based trio.

Mixtape Monday 3/11/13

Greetings and salutations friends. Welcome back to Mixtape Monday. My humblest apologies for the long wait between musical mix offerings. We’re back… and ready to help you through your case of the Mondays.

Check out this week’s mixtape on Spotify!

1. The Lone Bellow - “Green Eyes And A Heart of Gold”

If you haven’t heard of this band yet, now is the time to join the party. This awesome new folk collaboration project hailing from Brooklyn has been described as if The Civil Wars & Ray Montaigne had a music baby. I had the pleasure of seeing them perform live on the TWLOHA Light & Heavy Tour. They have an infectious live presence and we’ll be featuring their NPR Tiny Desk Concert later this week on the blog, but for now enjoy this track from their self-titled debut album.

2. Vintage Trouble - “Blues Hand Me Down”

I stumbled upon VT kind of by accident, but with a sense of deja vu. Recently, I had the supreme honor of scoring tickets to see The Who perform Quadrophenia. Vintage Trouble opened for them on their Quadrophenia And More Tour. I knew I had heard that distinctive lead voice before. Upon a little research, I saw that Ty Taylor had been a contestant on the 2005 reality show Rock Star: INXS and I recently had seen VT perform this track on The Late Show with David Letterman, was impressed, but had forgotten all about them. When they took the stage, everything came together and I was incredibly impressed as I hope you are too!

3. Jack White - “Love Interuption”

Jack White wears quite a few musical hats — musician, producer, record company/label/store owner — and he wears them all well. He’s been involved in such successful groups as The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, and The Dead Weather and now has put out the solo project Blunderbuss. Enjoy the lead single from the latest offering from the talented Nashville raconteur.

4. Fiction Family - “Up Against the Wall”

For those of you that have been following my musical tastes of the years, you’ll know how much Jon Foreman influences my life. He continues to be one of the most prolific songwriters of this generation. He’s had successes with Switchfoot and solo work and now has again collaborated with his fictional brothers Sean Watkins(Nickel Creek), Tyler Chester and Aaron Redfield for Fiction Family Reunion. I saw them on the same bill with The Lone Bellow for the TWLOHA Light & Heavy Tour and they brought the house to melodic sways with this lead single.

5. AWOLNATION - “Sail”

I’ve been digging this track from the Los Angeles-based electronic rock band AWOLNATION for quite awhile now, but it was just recently brought back to my attention as the music for the History Channel’s Vikings series. You can’t help but shout along with the chorus.

6. Spoon - “The Underdog”

Spoon has been featured on an earlier mixtape. They are one of those bands that you can put down for awhile, but once you hear the track on the radio or on random you, you turn it up loud and jam along with them. This track, from Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, is no different. Listen, tap along, turn up loud, and annoy your co-workers with the awesomeness of “The Underdog.”

7. Imagine Dragons - “It’s Time”

A friend of mine steered me onto this indie alternative rock band from Las Vegas about a year or so ago. They’ve progressively made it into my heavy rotation of albums. Their debut album Night Visions is a very solid offering.

8. Canon Blue - “Chicago”

The very beginning of this track is one of those riffs that you won’t be able of your head for quite awhile and I apologize in advance. I first heard Canon Blue when they opened for MUTEMATH on one leg of their Odd Soul tour and was impressed by their indie/electronic/folktronica vibe. Is that riff out of your head yet? No I didn’t think so…

9. The Heavy - “What Makes A Good Man?”

The latest offering from the group that brought you the other questioning song “How You Like Me Now?”, answers with another solid hit. You’ll hear this track from the rockers out of England all over your television in numerous trailers and ads asking what really makes a good man?

10. Mumford & Sons - “Lover of the Light”(Live From Red Rocks)

Back in August, thanks to the bucket list aspirations of my sister-in-law, I had the opportunity to experience Mumford & Sons perform live. It was an experience like no other, and one I will not soon forget. They played a solid two and a half hours of hits and new tracks, including this recent one from Babel. I’ve put the version from The Road To The Rocks on this mix, so that you too can experience just a piece of what I experienced a few months ago.

11. Matt & Kim - “Let’s Go”

Matt & Kim is one of those energetic bands that you can’t help but groove to. This Brooklyn native’s live show is no different. I saw them a little over a year ago bring the house down in Providence in a soldout hometown show, as they have ties to New England. Here’s their latest offering from 2012’s Lightning.

12. The Lumineers - “Stubborn Love”

The Lumineers have blown up in the past few months ago, from relatively unknown to soldout shows and performing on the Grammy stage. Everyone knows their big hit, “Ho Hey” so I am bringing you another track that has just recently started to get some airplay. Give this Denver-based band a listen if you haven’t had the opportunity yet.

13. The Civil Wars & T Bone Burnett - “Finding North”

There has been some turmoil recently in The Civil Wars camp, so there was great excitement when news came out of new collaborations. We’re still waiting to hear of the future of the duo, but for now we’ll enjoy this collaboration with legendary musician/producer T Bone Burnett. They came together to record the soundtrack for the documentary “A Place At The Table” which investigates incidents of hunger experienced by millions of Americans, and proposed solutions to the issue. Their hauntingly beautiful harmonies lay down a beautiful music bed to address such an important problem that many face today.

14. Muse - “Madness”

The latest offering from the alt progressive rockers out of England, continues to bring the groove of past ambitious projects. You can hear this track, from 2nd Law, everywhere right now and I have a feeling quite a bit more with March Madness about to get into full swing. I’ve already heard it licensed out to the NCAA for their tv promos of the yearly frenzy.

15. Adele - “Skyfall”

Adele keeps coming back with hit after hit. Even when she is “taking a break” she is churning out hits. She electrified the Oscar stage with her performance of the theme from the 23rd installment of the 007 franchise. She also took home a little golden gent for her work on this song. I’m looking forward to what’s next from Adele now that a string of positive things have happened for the Brit.

16. The Who - “Love Reign O’er Me”

This track may be familiar to those who keep up with Mixtape Monday as I’ve finished out a past mix with this closing track to the English rockers’ rock opera Quadrophenia, but I couldn’t pass up using and incarnation of it again due my recent live experience. As I mentioned earlier, I had the opportunity to see the surviving members, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend, along with Pete’s brother Simon Townshend on guitar, Ringo Starr’s son Zak Starkey on drums and a host of other support, perform their 1973 smash from front to back last month on the final American show of their Quadrophenia And More Tour. The experience left me speechless. The multimedia presentation and light display that backed up the already accomplished musicians made for sensory explosion of incredible proportions. So to close out this week’s mixtape, here is a live version of the final track to that iconic album, but with three of the original members(including John Entwistle), from a 1989 live performance.

There you have it folks. The return of Mixtape Monday. As always, let me know what you think and please check out past mixtapes as well! These offerings are a part of me. These are my jams and I always a musical discussion of what moves you.

Remember to become a fan on Facebook and follow me over on Twitter for the latest updates and exclusive content!

Jimmy, Mariah Carey and The Roots singing “All I want for Christmas Is You” with classroom musical instruments. Enough said.

I always love when Jimmy Fallon & The Roots team up with another artist and rock some classroom instruments. This time Mariah Carey joins the guys. Enjoy!

Well it has been awhile since any new content has been generated...

Well it has been awhile since any new content has been generated here on HutchdaddyVinyl, and I apologize for that… but let’s get the blog rolling again with the Korean sensation that has taken America by storm in the past year. Here’s a performance of “Gangnam Style” from last night’s American Music Awards by PSY featuring the 90s icon, MC Hammer. Last night at the 66th Annual Tony Awards, an evening which showcases and honors the many accomplishments of the talented folks that perform on Broadway, Once: The Musical took home a slew of statues(eight in all). Steve Kazee, along with the rest of the consummate ensemble, also brought the house to their feet with this performance of “Gold.” I was speechless throughout and afterward and from the look of the audience… I wasn’t alone. What do you think?

latenightjimmy:

Brace yourself, internet: Jimmy Fallon, The Roots and Carly Rae Jepsen perform “Call Me Maybe” using classroom instruments. JOY!

This is absolutely incredible. C’mon, you know you can’t get this song out of your head anyway… why not rock it with classroom instruments! Fallon & The Roots never cease to amaze me with what they bring to Late Night. If you’re a vinyl fan you NEED to pick this up. Fallon is at his best on musician impersonations and he doesn’t disappoint with David Bowie and Jim Morrison(The Doors).
Joy Williams told Entertainment Weekly that “It’s our homage to a survival song.” Her partner in music, John Paul Williams, added, “And also to trying to keep your cool and stay rational in a ridiculous situation. It’s a little bit of ‘It’s goign to be okay, it’s going to be all right, we’re going to make it through this,’ even when the situation around you is more dire than you’d care to admit. I think it’s how we all cope.”

He also told the magazine that they wrote the single “on the road in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. We were out there for a show, in one of the most beautiful places in the world. I think the landscape helped us capture the mood. We were unfettered, out in the middle of God’s country.”

So what do you all think of this track?

Here’s an incredible new video for the haunting new single...

Here’s an incredible new video for the haunting new single from Glen Hansard(The Swell Season, The Frames). “Philander,” from his upcoming debut solo album, Rhythm and Repose, takes you through the process of a relationship gone wrong. They delivered an epic performance of the last three tracks(minus the final hidden track) of The Beatles musical masterpiece Abbey Road. It was amazing to see Sir Paul conduct an epic guitar solo-off between the masters of rock that were gathered together to end the Grammy night. What’d you think of this performance?

The Grammys!

Friends.. follow me over at @HutchdaddyVinyl on Twitter for my live-tweet extravaganza of the Grammys! you’ve been warned.

Here’s a phenomenal new video from OK GO for...

Here’s a phenomenal new video from OK GO for “Needing/Getting.” You’ll see snippets of this during the Superbowl as part of Chevy’s ad campaign, but here’s the whole video! Check out the footage from last night’s show to judge for yourself. Also be sure to check out our prior post for the “Thriller” rendition from his Youtube channel. While I only watched the last half hour of the broadcast, I’m glad I caught the last few minutes with Phillip Phillips! His bluesy acoustic rendition of Michael Jackson’s classic, “Thriller,” wowed me and America. Well at least he was a trending topic on Twitter. Check out this performance from his Youtube page! The Idol performance was tighter, but this is sweet too! Check out the next post for his Idol piece. It showcases current and veteran NBA stars set to the soundtrack of “Live Forever” by Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors.
